Pathways”

"The urge to create has always been a part of me. As a child and teenager I laid the foundations of my drawing ability, which serves me to this day. Back then, when my artwork looked exactly like the object it represented, that for me was the pinnacle of success!
Long into my adult life, drawing and painting weremostly ways for me to represent the beauty I saw around me, and to grasp it, to possess it, so that it would not pass away. My message was "Look what beauty there is in this world!"
Luckily, artistic endeavor is an endless journey: an artist can always grow more, discover more, and progress along the pathways that emerge from within and stretch out into the future, often in several directions at once … Whoever continues to make art will never grow old.
And so, over time, I began to ask myself, what, in fact, my creativity strove to express. This issue bothered me for a long time, until I came to the conclusion that it was alright to plan less and control less. I realized it was time to stop hiding, to expose more of the person behind the art. I realized that I could put more trust in my subconscious mind.
….And sometimes, in the most beautiful moments, an artist may feel that s/he is not the creator. S/he may feel s/he has become imbued with a greater power, needing only to flow with the process and, at the end, stand aside and admire the result. "I did that?" S/he may wonder. "That came out of me? …"
I think I'm less scared today. Even when I have a map, I have learned not to follow it too closely. And to trust the pathways that lead me. Today every piece I create is an adventure.
About me: I was born in the United States and immigrated to Israel as a student. As in my childhood and teen years, I have painted through most of my adult life, alongside my occupation as a psychologist. I have participated in many group shows and had a solo show in 2010. I have lived in Holon for about 45 years.
I have been painting at Meira Ohad Dori's studio for many years, and to her I express my great esteem and my deepest gratitude.
